The figure below shows the perfect angle for the various breaking pitches. The arrow shows the direction of rotation as seen by the catcher. The position shown is where the pitch is thrown on the edges of the strike zone so that the pitch would look like it would be a strike to the batter and then break to outside the strike zone.

When learning a breaking pitch, start slowly and get the angle correct. Adjust your grip to whatever gives you the most number of rotations at the best angle you can achieve. Gradually increase your speed. You should use the arm-whip and windmill drills to learn how to throw breaking pitches correctly before you graduate to full-motion pitching.
